Chapter 8

My new year’s resolution for 2021 was all about ‘getting better’. In particular, getting better at writing. As part of the process, I’ve been paying special attention to ‘how I write’, trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t.

Unfortunately, it seems that as soon as I figure out a process, a few weeks later I find a way to wander away from it and end up in the weeds again. But unlike previous years, I’m resolved to stick with it and get back on the path.

I’m also slowly coming to grips with the fact that for me writing is like digging a tunnel. The further in I get, the more I have to go back and clean up rubble and dig my way out of cave-ins. Overall progress slows, but the quality of the tunnel hopefully improves.
